In Conversation with Balzac Paris

Balzac Paris

Meet the House Behind Modern French Style

Balzac Paris was founded in 2011 by husband-and-wife duo Chrysoline and Victorien, together with Charles, Victorien's brother-in-law and lifelong friend. Their original idea was beautifully simple: to bring the bow tie back into fashion by creating bespoke designs, handmade in France.

Rather than following a traditional retail model, they invited customers into an apartment where they could choose their own fabrics and personalise every detail. It was an early expression of the values that still define Balzac Paris today: thoughtful consumption, craftsmanship and creating pieces with meaning.

In 2014, the House introduced its now-iconic literary sweatshirts featuring the names of famous author couples. Their immediate success, particularly among women, naturally marked the beginning of Balzac Paris' evolution into womenswear.

Today, Balzac Paris has grown into one of France's leading responsible fashion Houses, guided by a simple ambition: to create a world where what is desirable is sustainable, and what is sustainable is desirable.

Certified B Corp in 2025 and recognised as a mission-driven company since 2022, Balzac Paris continues to champion responsible fashion through carefully selected natural, recycled and certified materials, predominantly French and European manufacturing, and an ongoing commitment to complete product transparency by 2026.

Tell us about your previous experience before launching Balzac

Before founding Balzac Paris, each of us followed different but complementary career paths spanning communications, publishing and creative project management.

Chrysoline began her career at Marie Claire Maison and Marie Claire Idées, where she worked as Community Manager. Those early years immersed her in digital storytelling and helped shape the way Balzac Paris has always communicated with its community.

Together, our previous experiences taught us the importance of consistency, creativity and building genuine relationships with our customers. Those lessons continue to influence every aspect of Balzac Paris today.

Who is the Balzac Woman?

The Balzac Paris woman is effortlessly elegant, curious and conscious. She believes style and responsibility belong together and chooses pieces that reflect both her personality and her values.

Rather than following fleeting trends, she builds a wardrobe thoughtfully—investing in timeless pieces she'll wear and love for years, while embracing a more considered way of consuming fashion.

She is modern, independent and quietly confident, proving that true elegance comes not only from how we dress, but from the choices we make.

Where do your design references come from, and how do you find the balance between inspiration and originality?

Every collection begins with a story. At the start of each season, our creative team develops a thematic universe that becomes the thread running throughout the collection, giving each piece its own meaning and identity.

We describe our aesthetic as tradi-barje—a uniquely French expression that combines timeless elegance with a playful sense of surprise. Classic tailoring might be reimagined with an unexpected print, a vibrant colour or a distinctive detail.

Inspiration comes from everywhere: exhibitions, cinema, travel, architecture, nature and vintage references all play a role. We love creating wardrobes that feel both familiar and fresh—pieces that become modern classics while remaining unmistakably Balzac Paris. This balance between refinement and individuality is at the heart of everything we create.

Where Style Meets Space: The Balzac Addresses

Balzac Paris

Our boutiques, what we call our 'Addresses' are designed as an extension of the Balzac Paris universe. Every material, colour palette and architectural detail has been carefully considered to create spaces that feel warm, welcoming and inspiring.

We want customers to feel as though they've stepped inside our world rather than simply entered a shop. It's a place to discover our collections, understand our commitments and experience the craftsmanship behind every piece. Above all, we hope every visitor leaves feeling inspired—not only by the clothes, but by the values that shape Balzac Paris.

What are the next steps for Balzac Paris? Are there any new launches, collaborations, or exciting ambitions coming up that you can share?
